Follow me on my journey as I build a Kato N Gauge layout whilst trying to make it look realistic. The layout is modular so will be built in Stages using the T-TRAK boards from Traintrax.co.uk Track will be a dual mainline with a Double Crossover and various sidings along the way.

Update #1

Adding more details

I have now started building up the layers a bit more with static grass and using the airbrush to blend colours together. Happy with how this is looking!

Update #2

Messy time!

The next stage was to add some elevation. The girlfriend got heavily involved with this section and she had free reign to do what she wished. Now it was a case of waiting for it all to dry!

Update #3

More scenery + Details

More scenic details added to the first boards - starting to look more like a model railway now. The first board is going to have some sort of residential area behind it with a playing field. Fence is up. I attatched this to a thin piece of ply before attaching it to the baseboard to make it easier.

Update #4

A big update

So a lot of progress has been made since the last update. The first two Double module boards have been built and the track laid, ballasted and the first weathering pass has been completed. I have also added the first set of cable trunking.

Update #5

Deciding on the baseboards

The next step for me was to decide on the baseboards I was going to use. As I have limited space, I opted to go for a T-Trak modular layout. This would allow me to build each section as I went along rather than having an overwhelming amount of track and plain baseboards leaving me wondering where to start. Train Trax UK (www.traintrax.co.uk) sell these and have multiple sizes to choose from. I started with 2 x Double Module boards.

Photos from The Proof of concept.

Here are the photos of the track after being ballasted, airbrushed and blended with some Static grass - I am really pleased with this and it gives me the green light to move on with the project!

Update #7

Step 1. Proof of Concept

The idea was to make the Kato track look as realistic as possible. Although it is ultra-reliable and known for its running qualities, Kato track generally looks quite unflattering if realism is your thing. Its great for a train set, but not so great for a realistic, scenic railway. So I set about working on changing that. Using a few pieces of straight track and some scrap ply from a previous layout build, I decided to explore options to make the track look good. The photo is the result of Stage 1.
