Hunslet Work

Andy Ross18 April 2026
This is my Hunslet works layout. I have exhibited as a work in progress for several exhibition but it is now off the circuit while I attempt to have it completed for an exhibition in October. Below is the description I send for exhibitions. The Hunslet Engine Company Works site in Leeds manufactured locomotives from 1864 to 1995 when production moved within the group that owned it at the time. The site was demolished in 1996 apart from two office buildings leaving very little of the original site. The area modelled includes the multigauge test track and a section of the main works where the Boiler shop meets the Erecting shop with features that represent a period from the early 70’s to the early 90’s. One of the main features of the layout is the operating overhead cranes, picking up locos and recreating the wheeling of locomotives. The multi – gauge test track features a variety of locomotives of different gauges demonstrating the range of different types of locomotives built by Hunslet. Due to the model including so much internal detail nearly everything has had to be scratch built. To help this the investment in a 3d Printer and a laser cutter has helped in the production of parts, however there are also limitations with these processes which means for the best results, these need to be combined with traditional modelling technics such as etchings.
